Hawks, Lady Hawks win home opener

It was a great morning to be a Hawk and Lady Hawk as South Side swept Covington in the home opener of the 2023-24 basketball season.

THE HAWKS (1-1) trailed by as many as 12 points in the second quarter but rallied for a 62-53 win. Robert Liggins scored 14 of his game-high 18 points in the fourth quarter, including 9 of 9 free-throw shooting in the final eight minutes. He was joined in double figures by Chris Mitchell with 11 points.

Other scorers: Jamarion Burns 2 points, Cash Montgomery 4, Kaleb Nettles 6, Simeon Graham 5, Amauri Goodman 7, Jamarion Grimes 9.

THE LADY HAWKS (2-0) were led in scoring by Felicity Long and Jaidynn Askins with nine points each in the 47-13 win for the defending 3A state champions.

Other scorers: Akira Lacy 2 points, Tiara Green 7, Aydison Dilworth 3, Myla Lacy 2, Amear’ra Cook 2, Ri’Kiya Mitchell 4, Hannah McCurry 6, Aubrey Lewis 3.

NEXT UP

The Hawks and Lady Hawks play again Tuesday (Nov. 21) at home against Bolivar. The Lady Hawks play at 6 p.m. with the Hawks to follow. (Unlike today when the Hawks played the first game at 9 a.m. as the Lady Hawks took the court at 10:30.)

SCHEDULING NOTE

The games against Munford, initially scheduled to be played after today’s Covington games, have been rescheduled for December 12.
