Soccer: Hawks 7, Indians 1

Gary Salinas scored two goals and every player on the roster got some playing time Tuesday afternoon (March 30) in South Side’s 7-1 win at North Side.

“Gary did a really good job distributing the ball around the field and making important passes and playing through balls,” coach Jake Stoffregen said of the senior captain.

Tybre Oswalt, Westleigh Newson, Angel Noyola, Josias Rodriguez and Mekhi Uqdah each scored a goal for South Side (3-0 overall, 1-0 District 13-AA).

“It felt good to get the district schedule started off with a win,” Stoffregen said. “We have a tough district. Getting the district schedule going with a win feels nice, but we’ve got things we’ve got to work on.”

Stoffregen said Newson, a sophomore, has been solid for the Hawks in the first three games.

“He’s having a really good season,” Stoffregen said. “He’s been a key player in all of our games. He had an amazing goal tonight.”

Rodriguez earned a starting position this season and is making the most of the opportunity.

“He’s done extremely well with it,” Stoffregen said.

Earlier this week, the Jackson Sun released its first Jackson area soccer rankings with the Hawks at No. 4.

“Getting recognized is always nice, but it’s still early in the season and we don’t want to get ahead of ourselves,” Stoffregen said. “We’re going to pace ourselves and keep trying to improve.”
