Hawks ready for showdown at McNairy

Energy.

Attitude.

Effort.

In other words, classic South Side football.

That’s what coach Tyler Reeder wants Thursday when the Hawks travel to McNairy Central for a pivotal Region 6-4A game, albeit a day earlier than planned. A win would secure the No. 3 playoff spot for South Side.

Initially scheduled for Friday, the game was moved up for a threat of inclement weather. Kickoff is 7 p.m. Tickets must be purchased online. None will be sold at the gate.

“We want to do exactly what we did against Chester County,” Reeder said Wednesday afternoon. “We want to play South Side football. “

The Hawks are 2-1 in Region 6-4A and last played Oct. 1 in a 28-7 home win over Chester County.

“I want to see the same energy, attitude and effort that we had against Chester County to finish out the rest of our season,” Reeder said.

South Side’s Khalil Henning runs for a touchdown Oct. 1 in the Hawks’ 28-7 home win against Chester County. The Hawks need to show that same energy, attitude and effort in Thursday’s Region 6-4A showdown at McNairy Central. Kickoff is 7 p.m.

The Hawks had an extra week of rest after being off last Friday night. School was out all last week for fall break

“We had a very much needed rest last week,” Reeder said. “We were pretty banged up.”

Rested and ready, the Hawks face a well-coached McNairy team in a high stakes region showdown.

“If we win against McNairy, that locks us in third place in the region,” Reeder said. “With a win Thursday night, the worst we could finish is third.”

Wes Johnson is in his first season as head coach of McNairy and was previously the head coach at Dresden High School.

“He’s a great coach,” Reeder said. “Offensively, he does several different things. They run a single wing like Huntgindon. They use a lot of misdirections and spread it out in sets.”

Despite some offensive struggles this season, McNairy (1-3 Region 6-4A) has big-play capability and won’t hesitate to try a trick play.

“They’ve had big plays and trick plays in every game this season,” Reeder said. “They’ve converted several and had some others not go their way, but the threat is there. We’ll have to be prepared for both tomorrow night.”
